The LGA is the single public authority that represents all 5 regions and 68 local councils in Malta and Gozo. The LGA enjoys a high level of competence and it is involved in the national policy development process by regular meetings with the director of Local Government and the Ministry and other relevant stakeholders. The LGA takes part in the Committee of the Regions and it is the only supporting structure for Covenant of Mayors in Malta. Since 2007, LGA has successfully participated in various EU funded projects that vary from: - Med Programme - Interreg IVC - Italia-Malta Programme - Life + - CIP - Intelligent Energy - Youth in Action Citizenship Programme

The LGA enjoys a high level of competence and it is involved in the national policy development process by regular meetings with the Ministry for Local Government/Director of Local Government and other relevant stakeholders.
The LGA takes part in the Committee of the Regions and it is the only supporting structure for Covenant of Mayors in Malta.
Promotion of European citizenship among all the citizens of the 68 local councils.
Representing and defending the common interests of local councils before the central government, including proposing new legislation and/or regulations, advising on the local government budget, and dealing with new policy issues;
• Proposing improvements to legislation with statements on draft acts and proposals for new acts,
• Holding of conferences, expert meetings and statutory meetings;
• Assisting local councils in exercising their powers through consultancy, expert and technical assistance, training and qualification programmes, conferences, maintaining databases, and providing advice on procurement issues;
• Communications through the Association’s website, e-newsletter, publications and manuals for exchange of best practices;
Interacting with international organisations, including joint projects financed through the EU, co-operation agreements with other Local Government Associations, and the encouragement of twinning events
