LFS was founded in 1923 and is a nation-wide organization that works toward preserving Norwegian folk music and dance traditions.
Its field of activities encompasses primarily the oldest forms of music and dance traditions in each district. The organization has approximately 150 member associations in most of the counties in the country and has over 5,000 members. The LFS arranges the Norwegian Traditional Music and Dance Competition and the Norwegian Festival for Old-time Dance Music every year. These events are arranged in various places in Norway. The Norwegian Traditional Music and Dance Competition is the major event of the year, and has been arranged for around 100 years. This competition presents the oldest forms of fiddling, singing and dancing in Norway. In addition to the competitions, concerts are arranged. The National Folk Dance Music Festival has been arranged every year since 1986. The main event there is the competition in more recent traditional forms such as waltz, reinlender and polka. The LFS has also established Norwegian Folk Music Concerts, which presents folk music in various venues in towns and villages throughout Norway.
We are publishing a periodical.
From 2005 we have arranged "Folkelarm ", a scene for promoting national, ethnic and nordic folk music.
